SIMPLE 5 ASIDE PLAY

Since our revisit, Henderson has not been a pleasant ground to play in. Today marked another frustrating outing yet there were some encouraging signs towards the end after the players sat down and had some tactical deliberation, so perhaps we can takeaway the following:

1) Compress the vertical space when defending

Theory - The inherent logic is simple. By limiting the space available for opponents to penetrate, we are forcing them to err and create counter-attacking opportunities for ourselves.

Practice - There are two ways to go about doing this. The first is the Spanish/Barca way of pressure-cooking the opponents in their own half, the second is to defend deep and force the opponents to commit players forward. Given the elongated pitch and fast opponents at Henderson, the latter strategy should be adopted.

2) Horizontal movements when attacking

Theory - When in possession, players should constantly move in such a way that there will always be a vertical option/support and horizonal option/support (L-shape or inverted L-shape) to make possible for triangular passing.

Practice - So far we have always maintained an inverted V shape when in possession (ie. the defenders and the pivot) but here is to add some variation to it. While our defenders will continue to swing the ball and the pivot will continue to drop back to link up; the free striker will now need to make runs from one flank to another so as to provide more options for the defender in possession. Once the ball breaks for the striker, the pivot will then go forward to provide the option for a center, whereas the defender at the same side steps up to provide the dahui option (see attached illustration).

Of course we ought to be less rigid in attack - the scenario above is however most effective (and safe) when we run out of ideas. Let's try to perfect these two and win more games at Henderson in the coming weeks.

Something interesting...

Brazil under Dunga

Personally, I see dunga's concept perfectly suitable for limited players (but not without specific attributes) like ourselves -- for e.g. IPPT GOLD kenbang in the ramiles box-to-box role, president ivna lim as a left-sided maicon, richard xiaokaka chong to play like kaka and the stringent me acting gilberto silva.. PERHAPS with hols coming up we can arrange testimonial matches to challenge our ever-evolving armchair understanding of the game :)

sharin f o o t b a l l

stonez shared with me something interesting today.. it was on improvin the awareness of a player.. i thought it is applicable to leadership..

While a professional does this every single moment, a social footballer tends to simply train his eyes on the ball and "follow" the play. This causes a microscopic view of the situation where he is only aware of the happenings in the area around the ball. He doesn't know who is standing where behind him, to his left, to his right; nor does he know if any team mate is making a run or any opponent is stealing up behind him ready to intercept a pass.

The whole idea is to expand your field of vision to cover all 360 degrees around you. This then enables you to develop a macroscopic view of the game as a player on the pitch. Try as much as possible to practise this and you'll start to realize you have become a much better player even without improving your primary footballing technique.

Recently i've watched a movie, a supposed comedy. Well its not exactly "a", but rather half of it - i deleted it after watching 40 mins of it. Sometimes, its a marvel how humour can appeal so differently to different people. I watched this movie because it was rated by someone as the "best comedy ever". Perhaps i am not well-equipped enough, or i am simply a dimwit, to be able to appreciate a movie of this complexity and depth.

Heres an excerpt from "Monty python and the holy grail"

Should this movie appeal to you, please, pray for me.

Some football videos

look at how joe cole made a good run through the channel from 3.05 to 3.11. if anyone don't know what i mean by "through the channel", feel free to ask me anytime. j.cole also made a horny reverse pass at 4.09, but let me highlight, the reverse pass is only possible cause his teammate understood his intentions and made a good run.
the concept of making good runs is a very important concept in football..no movement no passing.

and talking about passing, passing to keep possession is another horny concept, look at how celtic kept possession by passing, they moved the ball all around the pitch so effortlessly.

these are the football we want.

if a team wants to play good football,
1.there must be understanding and chemistry between the players like spain,
2.there must be players who make runs like david villa and torres,
3.and there must be players who make passes like fabregas and iniesta.

if an individual player wants to improve so as to contribute more to the team in terms of being able to play good football, he must both be able to make good runs, and also be able to pick out good passes.

i dare say i can do both, but still i'm not satisfied..football is a life-long learning process, however we only got the legs to play a few more years before age catches up with passion, forcing our retirement into the armchairs. i sincerely hope that before that time comes, we can achieve good football.

sharin football
for educational purposes, i have embedded the following video clip. watch the whole video clip of the spain vs russia match, you won't regret it, even russia showed good play at times.

spain's 4th goal deserves special mention, look at how xavi and fabregas intelligently criss-crossed their runs, that's what i call chemistry and understanding and that's what i call superb movement off-the-ball. if they had ran straight forward, the defenders would have marked them easily, xavi running from right to left, and fabregas running from left to right, made the defenders' day so much more torrid. it's the small things like these, along with vision, awareness, intelligence, understanding, and chemistry that makes football so beautiful and enticing to me. hope i manage to convert you all, just like how...

italy leh. we've actually clocked more passes, scored more, conceded less and won more games than the past few weeks. its hard to go gungho when some opponents choose to play rough, so G-ing was to reciprocate and to protect ourselves. anyhow passing and movement aside, PATIENCE has alw been the other important component to our football. we're not playing EPL, we appreciate a diff tempo to the game, and the idea to da hui has alw been our forte.

Today’s soccer is the worst I have ever seen from hornyteam. The soccer played juz frustrates me. Watching from the side of the court, I can’t help but think that we are not progressing at all.

Firstly, the opponents’ full court press strategy. Is it so difficult to overcome? Or are we too scared to take the ball and venture. Defenders dun dare to pass out I understand. Strikers actually sit on the half way line not moving. There was no movement, AT ALL. Kaoz. Even the opposition was frustrated. It was really cowardly like anything.

Second, the way the team played at times reminded me of the hornyteam I saw in sec 4. when max and ivan juz terrorized the court. Not with their footwork and team play, but with the gay-ish tactics cowardly behaviour. There was no invention. No initiative

Third, for all of Zhiping’s and Ivan’s efforts to educate on playing nice football, most important is the movement and teamwork. Soccer is all about passing and movement, with communication. There was none. No, sorry, my mistake. There was only passing, in a triangle, between the goalie, ivan and max, in a small triangle that has sides of 2m at most. And when Zhiping provided the extra option, ivan and max din grab the chance to pass to him and start and attack by opening up the play. They let the chance go by continuing with the gay triangle. WTF?!

Soccer is really about passing and movement. If there isn’t any, then juz quit, dun play anymore. If kenbang was around today, I’m sure he will KB till the cows come home. I juz sit at the side and observe the play.

Lastly, frustrating the opposition, and boring them into submission should not be the beautiful soccer that I believe we’re trying to achieve. We’ve always tried passing and control and possession. We’ve gotta show that next week, or else there is no point playing as a team anymore. There isn’t gonna be any improvement, even if individually you are all more skilled than others
